Mrs Darlene Smith

Head of Strategy: Caring4Girls, Sustainability & Education

Mrs Darlene Smith, former Marketing Director of Lil-lets South Africa, is one of the founding partners of the Caring4Girls initiative. Mrs Smith has always been passionate about CSI and has ensured that the companies she has worked for give back with relevant targeted projects. She now heads-up Strategy for Caring4Girls, Sustainability & Education for the Imbumba Foundation since January 2020, bringing with her, a wealth of strategy experience.

With over 25 years of experience in Marketing and a proven track-record, Mrs Smith has a comprehensive understanding of utilising consumer and product insights to maximise opportunities and deliver results in global, target-based environments. She has worked for global organizations such as Coca-Cola, BP and Unilever.

Mrs Smith started her career in Sales with Bakers Biscuits after completing her Marketing Degree through the Institute of Marketing Management. She then moved into Marketing, as Senior Brand Manager. In 1999, she joined Coca-Cola and was part of the Marketing team for the world’s leading beverage brand in South Africa. She then joined Nampak Tissue in 2001, as Marketing Manager and launched the first kiddies scented tissues in the world. In 2003, she joined BP as the Marketing Director for their Lubricants Division and launched the Mad About Oil campaign which, after winning a Loerie award, went global.

 

She then went onto launching her own Strategic Marketing Consultancy and worked as a full-time consultant for Coca-Cola for over 5 years. In 2010, she joined Brandtone, a Unilever Investment Company and was instrumental in the company winning a mobile marketing award for the OMO campaign. She joined Lil-lets in 2011 and launched the ‘We are Women’ campaign. Part of that campaign was the School Roadshow, which saw Lil-lets winning an Assegai Award for Direct Marketing Company of the year and a Product of the Year award for Lil-lets Long Pantyliners in 2013. She was then the Marketing Executive of Snacks, Milling, Baking and Breakfast at Premier Foods for 7 years.
